Wonderful for older babies and toddlers
This is a wonderful book to read with very young children. The story is simple and written in rhyme. The very vibrant colors really draw the attention of our twins as we read the book. My kids simply love it. I am certain your children will as well.

My son's favorite book!
This book describes the true meaning of "Aloha" - it more than a greeting or a word it is a way to live your life by being polite, considerate, thoughtful and telling those you love that you care about them!

The Golden Cage: The Enigma of Anorexia Nervosa
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (May, 2001)
Authors: Hilde Broch, Catherine Steiner-Adair, and Hilde Bruch
Average review score:

The skeleton in the closet unveiled
This is an absolutely outstanding book which gives in depth insight into the mind set of an anorexic, how they became so and how they can be treated. I am a 25 yr old female and 9 months ago suffered a horribly severe relapse of anorexia. A literally starving skeleton I ended up in therapy. I had no idea WHY I was this and my therapist suggested a long reading list. An avid reader I began devouring these books and it was "The Golden Cage" that had my soul reeling in agony. My husband of 8 yrs. read it, as well as his parents. This book was about me. Word for word, I was a text book case. Hilde Bruch unveils the truths behind the eating disorder in an easy to read as well as sensitive manner. A little out-dated in some respects (such as insinuating that any girl who exercises for fun must have something wrong with her!) as it was written I believe in the 70's, it is still valid as to the How's and Why's behind the disorder. Believe me, in order for a beautifull, healthy young woman to put herself through starvation, obsess with food every second of the day and become a neurotic, hyper-sensitive beast, there must be something deep inside that went severly wrong. This book tells us why, as well as how we / they can be helped. If you are a parent, PLEASE, read this with an open mind and heart and above all, DO NOT BECOME ANGRY!! Most importantly, seek help not only for your child, but for yourself as well. The road to recovery is tough for everyone.

A must read for any parent with a mentally ill daughter
A remarkable description of the basic personality and family mechanisms involved in teenage mental disorders and their anorectic expression.

How to Publish A Profitable E-mag

Wonderful and straight to the point
The book is wonderful for the busy business person who wants to get straight to the point on how to organize a profitable e-mag. I wanted to use an e-newsletter for marketing purposes for my small business. Because of this book, I have started a whole new subsidiary to my business. It has actually started to become an income stream, though minor, for my business. It more than pays for itself. I owe a large percentage of this success to "How To Publish A Profitable E-mag. If read from front to cover, it will take you less than 1 day to read. The author presents valuable resources and bullet point information. She also promotes other valuable resources that she doesn't even profit from. I find her book to be genuine and practical. I have used it as a blue print for our new business. She is very honest in mentioning the limitations in her book, but she points you to other books and periodicals that get further into the technical aspects of e-magazines. "How To Publish a Profitable E-mag" is definitely the first stop in publishing a profitable e-mag.

E-Books level the playing field...
I bought this brief "How To" book and was rather impressed. It provides a sound methodology for writing and publishing e-books in an age where small self-publishers can theoretically compete with the large publishers, especially if the self-publishers are skilled at digitizing their publications for online sales. The references to key "virtual" partners were also invaluable. Finally, I liked the fact that I could read the entire book in an hour or so.

Living on Fire: A Collection of Poems
Published in Hardcover by Random House (21 March, 2000)
Author: Virginia Hamilton Adair
Average review score:

Living on fire with Virginia Hamilton Adair
When I made the discovery of Mrs. Adair's poetry by her first
volume Ants on the melon, I quickly turned to her third release Living on fire, only to find the high expectations set by that first installment to be confirmed. Virginia Hamilton Adair provides a wonderful celebration of the joys and tragedies of her life. She reflects on love in its many guises, music, old age, her own blindness, the Mojave, the Mississippi (or Nature in general), the transcience of things and DGA (her late husband Douglass Graybill Adair), once again with the wonderful clarity and directness which characterized Ants on the melon.

It's difficult to pick a favourite. But I certainly loved it how she makes fun of her Victorian fellow-poet Robert Browning and composer Eric Satie (her fine humour is never absent). Especially touching are her poems about love. And I think those about her blindness are heartwrenching, as well as the more darker poems in the DGA section. Though she's wonderfully tender and funny in the joyous poems which celebrate her love for her late husband.

Virginia Hamilton Adair indeed lives on fire and by her poetry she lights fires.

Adair is Hot in Thermal, California
The third book by V. H. Adair is in the style of her first, 'Ants on the Melon'. The solar eclipse on the cover is evocative of the light verse of sheet music of the early 20th century , masking the alternative light and dark verse inside. The reader is drawn into the humorous couplings of guinea pigs, to be left viewing their corpses strewn along the street. The seduction continues in V. H. Adair's verse, and the reader is never disappointed.

Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (June, 1973)
Author: John Adair
Average review score:

albeit few pictures, best account of pre-1940 silverwork.
The book describes many facets involved in the creation of Pueblo Indian jewelry. This book is quite possibly the best and perhaps only scholarly work that explains jewelry making from the Indian perspective. The book gives much insight into the conditions on pre-1940 reservations and the trade practices that gave rise to "dead pawn" jewelry. This book is a must for serious collectors and those seeking thorough research. However, the book gives very little attention to the Harvey phenomenon, preferring to deal more directly with traditional Native American art (i.e. the jewelry that the creators would wear on themselves).

a very comprehensive text
the book gives in both words and photos the entire history of native silversmithing from its inception to the mid 1940 when the book was frst published. An excellent companion book to one of the many books written on comtemporary native american jewelery making.

A Scattered People

My first review
I stumbled across this book in the library. A few pages into it I decided I just had to own it. While reading it I'm saying to myself either, "Yes, that's how it was for my ancestors!" or "Wow, I never considered the role of religion/land grant systems/whatever on the decisions my people made."

This book tells how past cultural trends, local conditions, and historical events affected ordinary people and shows clearly that in order to know the people, we have to know the history.

This is not the book of an amateur genealogist but of a professional historian -- deeply researched, well reasoned, and skillfully written. A very satisfying book.

Outstanding portrait of America from 1801 to 1901!

The Wearing of the Green: A History of St. Patrick's Day
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (28 December, 2001)
Authors: Mike Cronin and Daryl Adair
Average review score:

Festival of fun has complex past
Seems surprising that an Englishman and an Australian have written the first history of Ireland's national day! No offence guys - I really like your book. Cronin and Adair are academics, so this is a serious and wide-ranging study. It looks at the rise of the legend of St Patrick, commemoration of the 17th of March in Ireland, and its export with Irish migrants to England, USA, Canada, and Australia. The book raises important questions about the politics of celebrating "Irishness", particularly at key moments of tension in Irish history, such as the 1916 rebellion and the 1970s Troubles. But it is also a tale of mirth and joy, for St Patrick's Day has always been an occasion for merriment and good cheer. Some of the stories will leave you laughing and scratching your head. For example, an Arab troupe once marched in a Montreal parade and won first prize for best entrant. Today the St Pat's festival in Dublin is a HUGE event, which, as Cronin and Adair explain, emerged directly out of Dublin Tourism. St Patrick is still there somewhere, midst the craic and booze. This is a big book, but it has sections about St Pat's Day in different parts of the world at different times. So you can either read the whole thing or pick and choose the bits you fancy. As for me, this book has helped me to understand why St Pat's Day is such a big deal. And it has helped me to appreciate the history of the Irish wherever they have migrated.

Glorious Green
I was sent this as a gift ready for St Patrick's Day, and to be honest wasn't sure that there was much to know about 17th March. But wait, this book rocks. It's great, full of anicdotes, reads really well, and kept me full of stories for my Irish friends for days. If you do nothing else this St Patrick's Day, grab a Guinness, put your feet up and read this book. Once you've read this you'll realise that, sure, it's a darlin day to be Irish!

Great for dummies and geniuses
In buying this book, at first I was a little reluctant to do so because I thought that the "Dummies" books were for, well, dummies. However, after doing an extensive search for books on PhotoDeluxe, I found that there were few. Of those, the only ones that are currently in print are a Quickstart book, which usually isn't that informative, and Adobe PhotoDeluxe 4 For Dummies. As a graphic production artist who is starting a career, I needed a book that could get me up to speed fast on PhotoDeluxe. I was particularly interested in the area of color correction, since that was my most pressing need at the time. The book, despite its title, exceeded all my expectations and I have gained a lot from it. It familiarizes you in the many features of PhotoDeluxe in a way that's easy to understand, without insulting your intelligence. The book covers everything, from color correction to the many special effects that PhotoDeluxe is capable of producing. In fact, from reading this book, I have learned that PhotoDeluxe is more similar to its higher priced counterpart, PhotoShop, than I thought it was.
In closing, I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to learn how to use PhotoDeluxe. In comparison with other books on graphic software, this one's as good as any other.

A terrific resource for the Photo Deluxe software
After trying on my own for a long time, I bought this book. I recommend it to anyone who is not an electronics whiz and wants to make the most of Photo Deluxe 1, 3 or business edition. It was very helpful. I did things not covered in any manual.
